Key figures on data-centre capacity, power and cost, with sources

This page collects the published figures behind our data-centre guides. Keystone AEC did not produce these numbers. Each one is quoted from the source named beside it. Where a number is our own arithmetic, we say so.

How was this compiled?

Each figure comes from a source we cite in the linked article, read on 21 October 2026. We did not re-read every source on the update date shown above, so check the source before you rely on a number. Private estimates and official figures often differ. The linked articles explain why.

How much data-centre capacity does India have?

  • India's data-centre capacity grew from 375 MW in 2020 to over 1,500 MW in 2025, according to a written reply in the Lok Sabha reported by IANS on 18 March 2026.
  • By city in 2025, the same reply gives Mumbai and Navi Mumbai 790 MW, Chennai 305 MW, Bengaluru 182 MW, Hyderabad 152 MW, and Delhi-NCR with Noida 76 MW.
  • The five named cities add up to 1,505 MW. That sum is our arithmetic, not a figure from the reply.

Limit: private estimates for the same year differ, because sources count live, committed or planned capacity and IT load or utility load in different ways. Detail: India's data-centre capacity by city.

How much electricity do data centres use?

  • Data centres used about 4.4% of US electricity in 2023, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report of December 2024 projects 6.7% to 12% by 2028.
  • US data-centre use rose from 58 TWh in 2014 to 176 TWh in 2023, and the same report gives 325 to 580 TWh for 2028.
  • The International Energy Agency says data centres used about 415 TWh in 2024, around 1.5% of world electricity.

Limit: the 2028 numbers are scenarios, not forecasts of a single outcome. Detail: How long does it take to get grid power for a data centre?

How long does a grid connection take?

  • Advisory firms report waits from about three years to more than six in busy US markets.

Limit: these figures come from advisory and vendor writing, not from a utility or a regulator. Ask the utility for a written timeline for your exact load and site. Detail: grid power for a data centre.

What does a data centre cost per MW?

  • A 2026 development cost guide for the US and Canada gives an all-in greenfield range of $8.9 million to $23.3 million per MW, excluding AI chips and GPUs.
  • The same guide reports that cost per MW rose about 21% from late 2024.
  • The 2026–27 Turner & Townsend construction cost index reports an average premium of 7% to 10% for US liquid-cooled facilities over air-cooled ones of similar IT load.

Limit: the range is wide because scope, cooling, density, redundancy, location and year all change the number. Read the scope before the figure. Detail: Why do data-centre cost-per-MW numbers differ so much?

What is carpet area under RERA?

  • Section 2(k) of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 defines carpet area as the net usable floor area of an apartment, excluding external walls, service shafts, exclusive balcony or verandah area and exclusive open terrace area, but including the area covered by the apartment's internal partition walls.

Limit: check the official gazette text and your state RERA rules. Detail: Where does the floor area go between FAR and what you can sell?

Where can I see the sources?

Every linked article ends with a source list and the date each source was read. For what Keystone AEC does with these figures, see data-centre site feasibility and What is Keystone AEC?
